A 1,000-pyeong ‘suspicious space’ under the feet of Seoul citizens, a look inside

A space hidden for 40 years beneath the New Seoul Underground Shopping Mall (currently City Star Mall), the first underground shopping mall built in Seoul in 1967, and above the tracks of Seoul Subway Line 2 has been opened to the general public.

On the morning of the 8th, a total of 20 citizens who applied in advance on the public service reservation website or applied on-site gathered at the 2nd Youth Vitality Center in the Citizens’ Office of Seoul City Hall.

This is to participate in the ‘Hidden Space, Time Travel: Subway Station Citizens’ Exploration Team’ event that the Seoul Metropolitan Government안전놀이터 runs four times a day every Friday and Saturday from this day to the 23rd. The exploration route starts at the Citizens’ Hall, passes through City Star Mall, the underground space, and City Hall Station, and ends at the Urban Architecture Exhibition Hall.

It is not yet clear when this space was created and for what purpose. The Seoul Metropolitan Government estimates that this space was created to connect City Hall Station and Euljiro 1-ga Station on Subway Line 2, which have different heights.

There are stalactites commonly found in caves as a drainage channel passes over the underground space, and the sound and vibration of subway line 2 passing every 4 to 6 minutes can be felt. A collection of photos of Seoul’s underground spaces revealed to the public for the first time in 40 years.
